Small businesses don’t have the luxury of wasting time, money, or energy. So let’s get real, some popular marketing moves just don’t serve you.
Here are 5 tactics I never recommend to small business owners (and what to do instead):
1. Running Ads Without a Clear Offer: Throwing money at Meta or Google ads without a solid, irresistible offer is like handing cash to strangers.
Instead, refine your value proposition. Make sure your landing page speaks directly to your audience’s pain points and leads them to a clear action.
2. STOP Trying to Be on Every Social Media Platform: You’re not a media company. You don’t need to be everywhere.
Pick one or two platforms where your audience hangs out, and show up consistently with valuable content.
3. Blindly Following Trends: Jumping on every viral sound or challenge may get views, but does it get leads?
Create content that aligns with your brand voice and long-term goals. Trends fade. Connection lasts.
4. Ignoring Local SEO and Google Business Profile: Too many local businesses overlook the free visibility tool right in front of them.
Optimize your Google Business Profile. Ask for reviews. Show up in local searches where buying intent is highest.
5. Focusing on Vanity Metrics Over Conversions: Likes, follows, views - great for ego, not always for revenue.
You should instead track actions that move your business forward - form fills, sales, consults booked. Data doesn’t lie.
Marketing for small businesses needs to be lean, focused and grounded in what actually works. Don’t fall into the trap of doing what looks good—do what drives growth.
Let’s build smarter, not louder.
